Bismarck police are investigating the death of an infant who died Thursday shortly after birth.

Sgt. Dwight Offerman said a 26-year-old woman gave birth to the baby, a girl, at her home in north Bismarck around 4 p.m.

The infant was taken to Medcenter One around 4:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Offerman said. Police were notified of the death by the Burleigh County coroner at 8:30 p.m.

Offerman said the death appears suspicious, but he declined to say what factors existed that made it suspicious. An autopsy will be performed, he said.

Offerman said investigators hope to learn whether the death was "accidental, negligent or intentional."
