A Mandan man accused of making statements that spurred the evacuation of the Century High School graduation has been charged with terrorizing.

Brian James Brandner, 20, was charged Tuesday with the Class C felony.

South Central District Judge Robert Wefald set bond for Brandner at $10,000 cash or surety and prohibited Brandner from coming within 100 yards of the Bismarck Civic Center or Century High School.

Burleigh County Assistant State's Attorney Pamela Nesvig recommended a $10,000 cash bond based on Brandner's criminal history. She said he has a lengthy juvenile criminal history, which includes juvenile adjudications for gross sexual imposition, indecent exposure, assault and criminal mischief.

Brandner also faces a ClassCfelony terrorizing charge in Cass County. According to court documents, he was released from custody upon posting 10 percent of a $5,000 bond. He is slated to appear on the Cass County charge on July 18.

Century High School's 5 p.m. graduation ceremony was under way when Paul Johnson, Bismarck's school superintendent, was told by a school resource officer that there was a threat.

The officer had been informed that someone at Kirkwood Mall had told another person there he had planted a bomb in the Civic Center. Later information from the police said the suspect's wording didn't include the word "bomb," but just that he was "going to cause problems … and he was going (to) blow them up," according to a news release.

After failing to locate a person matching the suspect's description, officials decided to evacuate the ceremony and instruct people to return at 6:30 p.m. after the police department's bomb squad had time to sweep the building.

Brandner was arrested by Mandan police Sunday night and was turned over to Bismarck police.

Brandner asked Wefald for a $1,000 bond at his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

"I never said a bomb threat, Your Honor," he said.
