TOM STROMME/Tribune Motorcyles and American flags (and even some Canadian flags) were everywhere for the funeral of Sgt. Travis Van Zoest on Saturday. The motorcycles were part of the recently formed Bismarck-Mandan chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders who serve as funeral escorts. People holding flags were all along the funeral route from the Church of Corpus Christi in Bismarck across Memorial Bridge and through Mandan and even on highway 1806 to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery people stood with flags as a tribute to Van Zoest.
In the frosIn the frost of the November morning a group of motorcycle enthusiasts gathered in Minot. Soldiers were returning home from Iraq and the motorcyclists were there to lead them to their families. Usually the get-togethers for this group are more somber occasions.
The Patriot Guard Riders attend soldiers' funerals, shielding grieving families from protesters. The Patriot Guard Riders are one of the 2006 Tribune Award winners.
"What is most gratifying, is part of what they do, is not only shield the family from the Westboro Baptist Church protesters, (but) it is men and women, veterans and non-veterans … a cross-cultural representation of people standing under one banner to show support to the family," said Rob Keller, North Dakota National Guard spokesman.
In Keller's experience, each member of the Patriot Guard Riders finds a way to show tribute to the fallen soldier, "to somehow show the loss of life was not in vain," he said.
The group is a national network of motorcycle enthusiasts and people wanting to show support for U.S. troops. They shield the family from protesters through non-violent means, by standing with their backs to the people, sometimes revving their engines, singing or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
No motorcycle is required and no previous military service is required to join the group, according to the group's national Web site. The group attends funerals, welcome-home events and other activities on invitation. For more information about the Patriot Guard Riders, visit www.patriotguard.org.
