A Bismarck man faces a three-day trial on charges of Class Afelony attempted murder, Class C felony aggravated assault, Class C felony leaving the scene of an injury accident and Class B misdemeanor driving under suspension.
Travis Ryberg, 18, maintained not guilty pleas to the charges on Monday before South Central District Judge David Reich.
A trial date has not yet been scheduled in the case.
Police were called to the 300 block of East Wachter Avenue at 2:08 a.m. on Aug. 11, where a 21-year-old Hazen man had been hit in the head with a hammer and run over by a pickup.
Witnesses said the victim, Townsend Bauer, and Ryberg went outside of a party to fight. Bauer, who also is known as T.J., attempted to walk away from the fight, and witnesses reported Ryberg got something out of his pickup, police said.
The witnesses reported Ryberg then chased Bauer and struck him in the head from behind with what turned out to be a hammer. A witness took the hammer from Ryberg's hand, and Ryberg retreated to his pickup, police said.
Ryberg allegedly drove his pickup over Bauer, who was in a yard. One report said Bauer was dragged under the pickup for about 30 feet. Witnesses said Ryberg hit a light pole, then another man jumped in the pickup and they left the scene.
According to court documents, the attempted murder charge against Ryberg stems from Ryberg allegedly driving over Bauer with his pickup. The aggravated assault charge covers Ryberg allegedly hitting Bauer in the head with a hammer.
Ryberg is being held in the Burleigh County Detention Center on $50,000 cash bond.
