It might be hard for North Dakotans to think spring, with snow on the ground and slippery roads.

An early spring snow storm dumped heavy, wet snow over the area late Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service got reports of 7 inches around Lidgerwood and 6 inches near Lisbon. The Fargo area reported about 6 inches by noon Friday, said Bill Barrett, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Forks.

Jamestown and Valley City each reported 4 inches Friday morning, while Grand Forks had about two-tenths of an inch.

The weather service said the heaviest amounts were near the southern border. In South Dakota, Sisseton reported more than a foot of snow.

Authorities said there were vehicles in the ditch along Interstate 94 near Fargo on Friday morning.

"It's a big mess," Fargo public works supervisor Lee Anderson said of the roads. Authorities warned drivers to be careful.

A state patrol dispatcher in Detroit Lakes, Minn., said three people suffered minor injuries when their sport utility vehicle hit a guard rail along Interstate 94 near Fergus Falls at about 3 a.m. The patrol says snow fog caused by a passing semi caused the SUV driver to lose control.

To the west, Bismarck reported 1.2 inches of snow on Friday, said Harlyn Wetzel, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service there.
