At least, there's been no visible progress on "Remember Minnesota," the screenplay that's trying to become a film. If it makes it, some of the opening scenes could be shot in Bismarck.
The script is based on the experiences of Brad Melby, a Bismarck native who helped lead the University of Minnesota rowing team to an unexpected medal in the country's biggest intercollegiate rowing event. Melby and John Carroll Lynch - an actor who appeared in the Coen brothers' "Fargo" - scouted possible shooting locations here last October.
When they were in town, Lynch said they hoped to begin shooting this spring.
Although the movie's Web site, www.rememberminnesota.com, says the film hasn't even begun preproduction, that spring goal remains. But before that can happen, filmmakers need to line up enough money to make it all work.
"We're more than halfway there," Susan Austin, investor-relations manager for the film, said. "We're continuing to push forward. I'd say we're making good progress. The biggest challenge is finding the financing, but we feel good about it."
Mikael Salomon has signed on to direct the project. He's been nominated for two Academy Awards as a cinematographer, for "The Abyss" and"Backdraft."
Bismarck native Lori Hammel, who's now acting in New York City, has sent her resume to Austin and producer Tess Clark. Another former local resident, Travis Kraft, has also expressed interest.
Austin said producers are reviewing actors' reels and hope to begin the casting process soon.
