Bismarck State College art students will hold an Earth Day Tree Hug-In at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday. The main gathering will be adjacent to Werner Hall.
Brian Hushagen, associate professor of art, says everyone gathered will hug trees between Werner Hall and Schafer Hall to bring focus to Earth Day and Earth Art on the BSC campus at noon for the duration of the noon chimes.
Several types of Earth Art, created by students in three dimensional design and sculpture classes, will be visible around campus. Some examples are rock poetry, mud mask and artistrees.
Rock poetry can be found in rock beds around campus and on some office counters.
One example of a mud mask is the large rock adjacent to the handicap parking for Schafer Hall. The rock has been partially "masked" with clay and grass clippings. Additional mud masks will be constructed, including a design on the exterior walls of Werner Hall.
Creating an "artistree" involves wrapping trees. Students wrapped a maple tree near the large rock with clay and grass in an ascending-descending spiral. On Monday students will create more "artistrees."
