The McQuade Softball Tournament ended here Sunday, but there was still drama until mid-Monday for one player and his wife.
At 12:56 p.m. Monday their new baby showed up after a weekend of threatening to do so at the McQuade.
Mia Elizabeth Aberle, 7 pounds, 4 ounces, waited until she was back home in Minot.
Her mom, Mary Aberle, had contractions through the team's two games on Saturday. But they were irregular and the couple decided to stay, if possible, for Sunday's games.
At the team's 11 a.m. Sunday game, Mary Aberle stayed at a Bismarck motel while her husband Ron Aberle pitched for his team, Kruse's Collision Center. His cell phone was with his equipment bag at the bleachers. There was one more game to play, for third place, but the Aberles decided that was enough and headed north.
"She was in too much pain," Ron Aberle said.
Ron Aberle said they got home at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and she had contractions through the night, but it wasn't until 6:30 a.m. Monday that her water broke.
"Everything worked out fine … Her and mom are doing excellent," he said.
Mia will be there, for sure, at next year's McQuade, Aberle said. And there will be no similar dramas for the next McQuade: The Aberles have a yours-mine-and-ours family of eight, now. They don't plan to have any more, he said.
The team, which is in the masters 35-49 age division, lost their last game while Aberle was away. But the team also lost two of three games while he was there.
Jerry Gooch, who started the team and was celebrating playing in his 30th McQuade over the weekend, said they just weren't hitting. And when they were hitting, it was right to the opposing players.
He also said the baby drama isn't new to the team. The team went through this at the state tournament in Fargo in the early 1980s when player Larry Eidsness' wife had contractions through the weekend and then had a baby girl the next Monday.
