The Burleigh County Sheriff's Department wants to know who's putting spikes in an off-road trail by Burnt Boat Landing.

In the past two weeks, two all-terrain vehicles have had tires flattened there. The spike strips have been an issue there for about a year, Mike Stoltz, a sheriff's deputy, said.

"We have a problem with someone putting two-by-fours with sharp steel spikes on them, then placing them in the the dirt and sand where ATVs travel," Stoltz said.

All that is visible is the spikes because the board is buried.

There have been more reports in the past two weeks about the spikes, so the sheriff's office has posted fliers asking for information.

The area is open to ATVuse and people also do other recreational activities there, Stoltz said. Someone could be putting the spikes out because they don't like the ATVs in the area, or the noise they make, he said.

"They don't realize the danger," of the spikes, he said. The ATV rider could be thrown, depending on what happens when the ATV rolls over the spike. Also, people and pets walking in the area could step on the spikes.

The sheriff's department is looking for information to find who is doing this because it is dangerous to other people.

To report any information about the spikes on the trail by Burnt Boat Landing, call 222-6651.
