North Dakotans got their first glimpse of winter Sunday as they woke up to snow-covered grass, trees and cars.

Western and central parts of the state received between one and two inches of snow as temperatures dipped below 30 degrees early Sunday morning. In Bismarck, about one inch was recorded. By afternoon, most of the snow had melted with temperatures hitting about 40 degrees.

A second storm system was forecasted to move through the state last night, bringing snow and rain, said Jerry Turner, National Weather Service meteorologist. A majority of the snowfall should be in the state's northern counties, with another one to two inches expected.

Snow is expected to fall in the area until late morning, when warmer temperatures will turn it into rain, Turner said. The forecasted high for today is 45 degrees.

More rain and warmer temperatures are expected later this week. Turner said highs for most of the week should hover around 50 degrees.

While Sunday's snow didn't give most travelers any headaches, there was one accident reported northeast of Glen Ullin on Interstate 94. Highway patrolman Chris Messer said at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday a semi-truck lost control on the slippery roads and jackknifed, striking a guardrail. The semi's trailer slid into the other lane, temporarily blocking traffic. No injuries were reported.
