About $23,700 in bonuses went to Bismarck Public Schools administrators in June.
A second round of bonuses were approved at the Bismarck School Board's second monthly meeting on Monday. This round of payments were for student achievement on the North Dakota State Assessment test. The earlier payments were for presenting a budget with a maximum 3.5 percent spending increase.
Bonus payments were added to the contracts because they are done with other superintendent contracts in the country, Superintendent Paul Johnson said at the last meeting.
Johnson received $6,206 for the student achievement bonus and assistant superintendents Fran Rodenburg and John Salwei each received $4,266.63. Combined with the earlier bonus payments, Johnson has received $10,206 and Rodenburg and Salwei have received $6,766 each.
The bonuses are in addition to the administrators' salaries. Johnson makes $156,000, Rodenburg makes $91,699 and Salwei makes $114,163 per year. The contracts end in June for the assistant superintendents and in June 2009 for the superintendent. The bonus payment was for the 2007-08 school year only in the superintendent's contract. Johnson will make $163,020 starting July 1.
Student proficiency scores in math and reading were used to decide the payment for the latest bonuses.
They also received payments earlier this month for giving the school board a budget with a maximum 3.5 percent incrase. The budget did not include capital improvements. This bonus was a flat rate.
It is the administration's job to present a budget each year, and the school board can set guidelines on what type of budget it wants presented at the meeting. The incentive pay for doing this was new to the contract.
