On Tuesday, the residents of Lincoln will get to make several choices on how the community is run as they head to the election polls.
Those residents south of Lincoln Road will vote at the city offices adjacent to the intersection of Lincoln Road and 66th Street. Those north of Lincoln Road vote at the Bismarck Rural Fire Department located on Highway 10, just west of 66th Street. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
Incumbent Glenn Christmann is being challenged by Mary Ann Filibeck for mayor. Christmann is looking for a second term; Filibeck is a former commissioner who did not seek re-election in 2006.
Christmann has been sidelined the last several weeks as he recovers from heart bypass surgery, but appears healthy enough to resume his duties. Filibeck was first elected to the council in 1996. She became acting mayor for a short time. In 2005, Filibeck was appointed to the council. She has twice been recalled, losing her council seat in 1998 and being re-elected in 2005.
There are three seats available on the council, two with four-year terms and one with a two-year term as the council begins the process of reducing membership from seven to five. Incumbents Bob Johnson and Peter Hoerner are joined by challengers Marie Horning, Steve Urlacher and Reed Unterseher.
Urlacher is serving on the council in place of Andrew Horning. Should Urlacher be elected, the council will be charged to find another replacement, either through appointment or special election.
Marie Horning, the wife of Andrew, has participated in city government in a variety of capacities and is a member of the planning and zoning commission.
Johnston is a former mayor of Lincoln, first appointed to the council in 1998. He was defeated by Christmann for mayor in 2004 and then won a council seat in the 2005 recall.
Hoerner served on the council in the 1980s. After an absence from the council, he was elected to office in 2004.
Unterseher is making his first run at public office as a council member candidate. He is a member of the National Guard's 112th Command Aviation Battalion.
The top two vote-getters will get the four-year terms, while the third highest will have a two-year term.
Also on the ballot are three park board positions. Only three candidates are on the ballot: James Anhorn, Dan Cox and Lana Berhardt. Lincoln municipal judge Charles Isakson is running unopposed.
