Allegiant Air on Wednesday announced non-stop service to Phoenix from Bismarck.

In 2007, Phoenix was the fourth most popular destination for Bismarck travelers. The new service will begin Oct. 18 and offers two flights a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

"In these times of rising fuel costs and increasing (airline) fares, it's nice to offer some non-stop service," said Greg Haug, Bismarck Municipal Airport manager.

Allegiant is offering an introductory rate of $119 each way. This price is available for tickets purchased by Sept. 3, and must be used by Jan. 31.

After the introductory rates are no longer offered, the price will increase $20.

Flights will depart Bismarck at 9:10 p.m. and arrive in Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, not Sky Harbor International. John Fenyes, director of sales for Allegiant, said Gateway is not conducive to connecting flights.

Leaving Phoenix-Mesa, flights depart at 3:45 p.m. and arrive in Bismarck at 8:30 p.m.

The addition gives Bismarck Airport a total of four direct-flight destinations. The other three are Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Denver.

In May 2004, Allegiant offered a direct flight to Las Vegas. Allegiant credits the Las Vegas flight's high service numbers and the number of Bismarck travelers bound for Phoenix for adding the flight.

Fenyes said if the Phoenix destination is popular, they will add more than two flights per week.

"I think Phoenix is a great choice," said Bismarck Mayor John Warford. "I hope it is preview of more coming attractions."
