The Rugby FFA knows how to run a meeting.

The team won the state parliamentary procedures contest, and now go on to the national FFA contest on parliamentary procedure.

Four teams ran a mock meeting to demonstrate their knowledge of Robert's Rules of Order and parliamentary procedure. Rugby, Napoleon, Kenmare and Minot FFA teams competed in the finals.

"Our own meetings in the chapter use Robert's Rules of Order," said junior Megan Haner of the Minot FFA.

The teams also spent the past two months practicing for the contest. For the finals, the teams considered two items of business: a farm safety program for National FFA week and selling scrap paper from a highway clean-up.

Teams moved through the mock motions using proper procedure to consider the business and vote for the business.

Members of the Rugby team are president Lucas Schmaltz, a senior; secretary Monica Pritchett, a senior; sentinel Jacey Shirely, a junior; parliamentarian Chris Fedje, a junior; treasurer Kelsey Mongeon, a junior; student adviser Kristy Mattern, a junior; historian Laura Hoffert, a senior; vice president Jake Knain, a senior; and reporter Zach Ramden, a junior.

The state contest was at the state Capitol in Bismarck. The national competition is in two weeks in Indianapolis.

In addition to preparing for competitions, the FFA teams do community service and promote careers within the agriculture industry.
