A Bismarck woman rear-ended the wrong vehicle early Wednesday morning - a police squad car.

Bismarck Police Sgt. Dwight Offerman said the crash occurred at the intersection of South Seventh Street and East Front Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. An officer stopped at a red light while going east on Front, and she was rear-ended by a car driven by Tina Thompson, 36, of Bismarck.

No one was hurt, but damages were estimated at $1,000 for each vehicle, Offerman said.

He said Thompson was intoxicated, so she was arrested for driving under the influence.

Burleigh County Assistant State's Attorney Richard Riha said officers at the Burleigh County Detention Center found a "brown, ceramic smoking device" for use with marijuana in Thompson's possession while booking her in at the jail.

Thompson faces a municipal court charge of DUI and a traffic citation for care required. She has not appeared in court on those matters yet.

Thompson also was charged in district court on Wednesday with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class Amisdemeanor. She pleaded guilty. South Central District Judge Tom Schneider sentenced her to 10 days in jail, all suspended, and mandatory court fines and fees.

After Riha explained the circumstances of Thompson's arrest, Schneider asked how she managed to run into a squad car.

"I was intoxicated," she replied. "I was digging around in my purse. I wasn't paying attention. I took my foot off the brake."
