Two people have filed for the Bismarck School Board.

Seeking the two openings are incumbent Paul Govig and Lawrence King. Incumbent Parrell Grossman will not seek another term, instead seeking a seat on the Bismarck City Commission.

Govig, 51, is the director of development and community service with the North Dakota Department of Commerce and King, 42, is an attorney with Zuger Kirmis and Smith.

This is King's second attempt at the school board. He launched a write-in campaign in 2002, but lost. This time, he wants his name on the ballot.

"We have an incredible district here," King said. "I want to be a part of that. We're at a pivotal time with space and facilities and the best use of resources."

He and his wife, Tammy, have three children: a 16-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old son and a 6-year-old son. Their middle child already started pressing for his father to get sports drinks back in schools, but King doesn't want to change the policy that bans such drinks.

Govig, who was first appointed and then elected to the board, is finishing out his first term. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, ages 18, 16 and 14.

The board is "excellent," Govig said, and works well together.

"To date, I've very much enjoyed being a part of that," he said.

The filing deadline for the Bismarck School Board election is April 11 for a candidate's name to appear on the ballot. The election is June 10. There are two four-year terms up for election. Applications are available online at www.bismarckschools.org, under the School Board link, by calling the business office at 323-4056 for copies or at the district office, 806 N. Washington St.

In Mandan, three seats are up for election on the Mandan School Board. Board members Steve Nardello, Donna Fishbeck and LuAnn Nider are up for election. Board members are elected to three-year terms. Applications can be picked up for Mandan at the Central Administration Building, 309 Collins Ave.

No one has yet filed for the Mandan election. Applications are due April 11.
