NORTHWOOD, N.D. (AP) - Larry Grossman, a teacher for 30 years, is now hitting the books, himself, to prepare for the AARP National Senior Spelling Bee.
Grossman will be North Dakota's participant in the spelling competition Saturday in Cheyenne, Wyo. It is expected to draw about 100 contestants, ages 50 and older, from 31 states.
Grossman, who teaches at Fordville-Lankin High School, won the North Dakota Adult Spelling Bee.
"It usually comes down to knowing the right word at the right time," he said.
He is preparing for the weekend by studying the books he uses with his students as well as word lists from past spelling bees. He said he is trying to learn as many unusual words as possible.
Grossman, who is recovering from open-heart surgery last month, said he will travel to Cheyenne with a friend, so they can take turns driving.
"I think that my teaching experience will help me a lot," he said. "I have learned a lot of words over the years, but in the end, it is a combination of spelling and luck."
