Imagine spitting on a soldier returning from war. Shouting at him. Accusing him of murder.
It can be unfathomable in days of yellow ribbons, parades and banners proclaiming "Support our Troops."
The insults and rudeness greeted many Vietnam War veterans returning from a tour of duty. Some North Dakota Vietnam veterans shared their memories of coming home and other war experiences in a documentary to be shown Thursday at Century High School auditorium. The viewing at 7 p.m. in the auditorium was made by the CHSAmerican Pageant class.
"Through a Soldiers Eyes" gives the veterans a voice of what they saw and felt from leaving to fight to coming home.
"You see what it's like for the men to speak for themselves," CHS teacher Mary Palmer said. "The documentary captures the veterans' voices. It is a compilation of reflections."
Don't expect a documentary chronicling events and important people of the war.
"It's people from Bismarck and our neighbors," junior Natasha Schafer said.
She is one of the more than 70 students involved in the project. The students interviewed 21 veterans. Each veteran interviewed is invited to the showing Thursday.
"Every story has a favorite event, " junior Andrew Sailer said.
It makes it hard to pick a favorite because each experience is so different, he said.
Listening to a man speak of his thoughts when a girl spit on him when he got off the airplane, another man describing how he told his father he was home and of running into an acquaintance upon his return are a few of the memories shared in the documentary.
"I'm really glad I did this because it was a lot of fun to get to know them through the interviews," junior Fiona Kolberg said.
The documentary will last about an hour. Outside of an introduction and conclusion, the documentary will be veterans speaking.
