Even parents who had their kids fingerprinted at last year's Kinderprint should attend this year's event to make sure they have updated records in case their children go missing, a sheriff's department officials says.
Burleigh County Sheriff's Maj. Nick Sevart said it might be hard to remember a child's weight or height in an emergency. Having recent information available can alleviate some problems in a crisis, Sevart said.
"If, God forbid, we ever have a kid go missing, it's so important to have that information," he said.
Officers from the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department and the Mandan Police Department will be fingerprinting and photographing children Saturday at Bismarck and Mandan Northwest Tire locations during Kinderprint.
The fifth annual Kinderprint is sponsored by Cumulus Broadcasting, which owns five radio stations in the Bismarck area, said Cumulus sales manager Travis Wipperling.
Wipperling said parents also will be given a pamphlet in which to document their children's height, weight and other identifying information and will receive a kit for the purposes of preserving their children's DNA.
The fingerprints and photographs are given to the parents, who can keep the information in case their children are kidnapped or lost, Sevart said.
"We do not keep the fingerprints," he said.
Wipperling and Sevart agree children who went to Kinderprint last year should be brought back.
Children change a lot in a year, and parents need to have updated information, Wipperling said.
"As kids grow, it gets easier to read the fingerprints," Sevart said.
Wipperling said pizza, drinks and prizes will be available at Northwest Tire during the event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Northwest Tire has three locations in Bismarck and Mandan: 1615 E. Bismarck Expressway and 1001 Weiss Ave. in Bismarck and 422 E. Main Street in Mandan.
Sevart said this will be his fifth time helping out with the event.
"And the fun thing is, we get to meet the kids, and they get to meet us," he said.
