The Beatles tribute band Backbeat is bringing their 1960s hairdos to Bismarck on Tuesday. The band aims to look and sound just like the Beatles.
Every year, the Sertoma Club has a fundraiser in the form of a concert. Last year, it was a Patsy Cline tribute band, and this year it is Backbeat: A Tribute to the Beatles.
"We like to fundraise for worthwhile organizations," said Danny Lopez, also known as George Harrison in Backbeat.
The Sertoma Club will use the proceeds from the event for their service projects. The Sertoma Club works with the Bismarck-Mandan public school system to provide hearing aids and therapy for children with hearing and speech disabilities. They have purchased numerous hearing aids and microphones to give auditory-challenged children the same opportunities as other children in the Bismarck-Mandan area.
"We have also helped some families with speech therapy," Sertoma Club board chairman Keith Holzer said. "We do have some speech pathologists in the schools, but as time allows they only get a few sessions a week. We are able to get them some other classes."
The Sertoma Club also sponsors the lynx den at the Dakota Zoo, and puts on Christmas in the Park each year. Because this year is the Sertoma Club's 50th anniversary, they will be planting 50 trees in Sertoma Park with assistance from the park board. The aim of the tribute concert, besides entertainment, is to raise money to fund these endeavors.
"What the club makes, 100 percent goes back into donations," Holzer said.
Backbeat is known as "The Hollywood Beatles" for their performances in several movies, including the recent "National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation." They have performed in more movies and television shows than any other Beatles tribute band in the country. They perform using replicas of the Beatles' instruments and equipment in order to be as much like the Beatles as possible.
"The audience loves us, because we are never serious," Lopez said. "We just have fun going out there and making our audience laugh."
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ramkota Hotel Ballroom. Admission will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information and advance tickets, call 255-7275.
