Members of West Dakota SWAT talked a man out of his house after an almost six-hour standoff.

The man, who lives in the 500 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest in Mandan, came out of the house at 11:51 p.m. Local law enforcement were trying to get him out of the home since about 6 p.m. The street was closed about 9:30 p.m., Mandan Sgt. Brent Wilmeth said.

Police were called to the house by the man's girlfriend. She told police he hit her with a wooden stick, then went into another room and shot a gun twice and then went back and hit her four more times, Wilmeth said.

"She fled the residence and called police," he said.

She received some injuries. The woman, who is 54 years old, lives there with the man.

The man is in Morton County jail. A judge and the state's attorney signed off on the charges already, Wilmeth said. Kip Campbell, 41, was charged with terrorizing, a class C felony; reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor; simple assault, a class B misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor.

When they went to Campbell's residence, they tried contacting him by telephone several times, but he did not answer. A search warrant for the house and an arrest warrant were secured, and the SWAT team used a special type of telephone to communicate with the man.

The road was blocked from the nearest intersecting streets and the alley access, Wilmeth said. It was reopened after the man was arrested.

In addition to the day and evening shift of the Mandan Police Department and members of the West Dakota SWAT, two Mandan detectives, the deputy chief, and two nighttime deputies of the Morton County Sheriff's Office also assisted on the scene. The Mandan Fire Department assisted with the street closure, Wilmeth said.
