A sex offender who registered a state park as his address, then left the campground, was located at a Mandan store Thursday morning.

Morton County Sheriff Dave Shipman said Timothy Robert Carpenterlove, 39, was spotted by a citizen at a business along Highway 10 Thursday morning. He was arrested on a warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, a Class C felony, at 9:30 a.m., Shipman said.

"Our office received three calls in two minutes that he was there," he said.

Carpenterlove, a moderate-risk sex offender, registered an address of Spot 66 in the campground at Fort Lincoln State Park on Aug. 2. He vacated the campground on Aug. 10, and he did not notify the sheriff's department of his change of address.

Park manager Dan Schelske said Carpenterlove was visiting the park with his family, and park officials were unaware he was a sex offender.

A local visitor to the park saw Carpenterlove on the North Dakota attorney general's sex offender Web site and called to inform the park on Aug. 9. The next day, Carpenterlove and his family left the park.

People can stay in state parks for only 14 days.

Carpenterlove was convicted in 1988 in Arizona of attempted molestation of a child for nonconsensual sexual contact with an 11-year-old boy. He was sentenced to three years of supervised probation.

He also was convicted in 2006 in Mercer County of sexual assault for having oral sex with a 14-year-old boy. He was sentenced to 30 days, with 10 days suspended and two years of supervised probation.
