A name was chosen for the Bismarck Public School District's building that is under construction at Bismarck State College.
It will be called the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy. The board chose the name at its meeting Monday at Will-Moore Elementary School.
The selection is close to two of the five names under consideration. At the last board meeting, potential names were given, including Career & Tech Center, Career & Skills Academy, Centers of Careers & Technology, Career & Technical Academy and Skills & Science Center.
Board members liked the sound of academy in the name, but some wanted to be able to uniquely identify the building without confusing it with the Bismarck State College Technical Center.
"The thing is, to call it something people will understand," said career and technical education director Dale Hoerauf "You don't want to call it something it's not."
In addition to the sign on the building, there will be a sign out front of the building that will list the programs that Bismarck Public Schools and Bismarck State College offer in the building.
The district is sharing space in its new building with the community college and the community college will continue to share space in its technical center.
The Career Academy is a 90,000-square-foot building that will house some of the district's career and technical programs. The project costs about $12 million. It will open in fall 2010.
The district is also completing construction on Sunrise Elementary School, which also will open in fall 2010. The board talked briefly about the boundary proposals for the new school at its meeting. Following the meeting was an informational meeting about the boundary proposals.
