Greenwings Day is scheduled from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at Audubon National Wildlife Refuge near Coleharbor.

The Greenwings event features activities that teach youth and their families about wildlife conservation and outdoor skills associated with hunting and fishing.

Four field demonstrations are planned:

n Target shoot: Participants learn safe firearm handling techniques and get supervised shooting practice, using CO2 pistols and air rifles.

n Waterfowling: Participants learn tips for becoming a better waterfowl hunter that include dressing for the hunt, proper placement of field and water decoys, proper ammunition and use of blinds.

n Coyote calling and hunting: Techniques will be shared for calling coyotes and hunting and trapping them.

n Aircraft in migration flyway: Learn how biologists conduct waterfowl surveys from the air and how the data is used to set population sizes and hunting bag limits.

Weather permitting, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service airplane will be on site.

Following the field demonstrations, the Douglas Sportsmen's Club will provide a picnic lunch.

Prizes and educational materials will be handed out and each family will receive a Greenwing membership, which includes a one-year subscription to Puddler Magazine.

Audubon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center is located three miles north of Coleharbor on U.S. Highway 83, then one mile east.

There is no charge or preregistration for this event.
