Five businesses in Bismarck sold tobacco products to teens when tested Monday.
A tobacco compliance check team, consisting of five teenagers, two Police Youth Bureau youth workers and three Bismarck police officers, visited 36 retail tobacco outlets on Monday evening. Bismarck has 40 businesses that sell tobacco, but the team was unable to attempt sales at four businesses, because the teens knew employees working at the stores.
Four of the five businesses that sold tobacco to the juveniles did so without checking identification. Employees at B&J Tesoro, 406 N. Sixth St.; Cenex, 2520 Centennial Road; Loaf-N-Jug, 2600 E. Rosser Ave.; and Cenex, 2006 E. Broadway Ave., sold to minors without checking IDs.
An employee at Northbrook Tesoro, 1905 N. Washington St., checked ID prior to selling a tobacco product to a teenager.
According to a release, adults were responsible for the sales at four businesses, and a juvenile was responsible at one.
Reports on the compliance checks will be sent to the city attorney.
