Last summer, Home and Garden Television's "That's Clever!" took a tour through the Midwest.
The craft show's camera crew stopped along the way to film several North Dakota artists, including Gwyn Ridenhour and Sue Cahill, both of Bismarck.
A "That's Clever!" episode featuring Ridenhour will air at 8:30 a.m. on June 15 on HGTV, local channel 61. An episode featuring two segments by Cahill aired on April 9.
In each episode, the daily half-hour series visits three different crafters in their homes to learn about their crafts.
In the June 15 episode, Ridenhour will demonstrate how to make a children's garden box with vegetable-shaped plant markers.
Ridenhour said her children inspired her first painting projects, which include nursery-wall murals and canvas paintings.
She made her first wooden garden box with her son several years ago.
"It's something for a kid that's still in the style of painting," she said.
"That's Clever!" likes to focus on three-dimensional art, like her garden box, she said.
Cahill, who said she watches "That's Clever!" often, applied to be on the show two years ago. So, when the show needed guest artists for its Midwest tour, she was one of the first in line.
Originally, Cahill submitted a sample of her paperscape art, but the show asked her to develop the paperscape into a journal.
In the April 9 episode, Cahill demonstrated the journal and an origami memory card in two segments.
Even though both women had appeared on Community Access Television's "arTView" before, Ridenhour and Cahill were nervous about presenting their crafts to a national audience.
Cahill said the friendly film crew made her feel comfortable.
During filming, Cahill had to give detailed instructions, so a lay person could easily understand her projects, she said.
After 16 hours of filming in Bismarck, the crew had all of the footage they needed for the segments featuring Ridenhour and Cahill.
The final, edited segments were about six minutes long, Ridenhour said.
Even though shooting and re-shooting her segments took a lot of time, Cahill was very happy with the finished product.
"It was amazing; the finished segments looked seamless," Cahill said. "How they put it together made the community look nice. They made Bismarck look great."
"It was definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences," Ridenhour said.
