Melissa Starr, a month out of federal prison after serving a term for stealing money from the Twin Buttes school, will be back in court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Starr was arrested March 22 after stopping her van in the wrong lane on Highway 200 near Halliday and causing another driver to crash into her in the nighttime, foggy conditions.
Her passenger, Beverly Lone Bear, also of Twin Buttes, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, said Dunn County Sheriff Larry Boepple.
The alcohol potentially violates Starr's probation conditions, which forbade alcohol or drug use for 18 months after her 18-month term. The situation is under review by her federal probation officer, said assistant U.S. Attorney Clare Hochalter.
Starr is scheduled to be in Southwest District Court on April 15.
Boepple said a county deputy heard a loud crash at about 9:30 a.m. while he was getting information from people who had encountered Starr's vehicle in the highway.
The deputy heard Colleen Medicine Stone striking Starr's van when she swerved but couldn't avoid it.
Both Starr's and Medicine Stone's vehicles were totaled, the sheriff said. Medicine Stone also was treated for injuries.
In 2007, Starr pleaded guilty to stealing $309,000 from the Twin Buttes school while she was president of the school board. She was sentenced in November 2007, her six children crying as she was taken from the federal courthouse in Bismarck to prison.
She also is required to pay back the money she stole.
A federal agent investigated the school's finances for nearly two years, an investigation that uncovered rampant corruption in which Starr and six other school board members and employees covered for each other while falsifying travel vouchers, taking thousands of dollars for training events that were never attended, endorsing school checks to one another and taking school cash.
In one instance, the school board racked up $40,000 in hotel and food bills during a 2004 holiday basketball tournament in Bismarck.
