MANNING, N.D. (AP) - A man is facing charges in the death of a calf belonging to a Halliday rancher, the Dunn County sheriff says.

Dustin Wolf, 31, of Dodge, is jailed in Dickinson on charges of mistreating animals, criminal conspiracy and theft, Sheriff Larry Boepple said.

The calf was dragged to a farmstead about a mile from where it was shot Sept. 16, and Wolf allegedly was skinning it before he was scared off by people who pulled into the farmstead, Boepple said.

The calf belonged to Rodney Stein of Halliday, who reported it had been shot, the sheriff said.

"The owner of the calf had been driving by the county road and saw his calf had been shot," Boepple said. "When he came back, it was gone."

A second person may be charged in the case, the sheriff said.

"It is one of the weirder ones," he said.
