Bobcat Co. is shutting down its plants for several days this summer.
Workers at the Bismarck plant were told Tuesday afternoon about the shutdowns, which will be June 10 through 12 and July 6 through 10, said Jeremy Bauer, president of the Bismarck United Local Steelworkers Union 566.
The Gwinner plant will be shut down for June 24-26 and 29, confirmed Laura Ness with Bobcat. Gwinner's July 6 through 10 shutdown, however, is a scheduled maintenance closure.
Bauer with the Bismarck plant said they could see the shutdown coming.
"They're just shutting down basically because right now, we're building to order,"Bauer said. And they only have two orders to work on, he added. "Plain and simple."
In April, Bobcat Co., which manufactures skid-steer loaders and light construction equipment, said they were temporarily laying off about 250 workers. From December through February, the plants were shutdown for the longest time in their history.
In November, they offered reduction-in-force severance packages to 150 workers.
Total workers between the Bismarck and Gwinner plants is about 1,200.
Ness with Bobcat said salaried workers, including research and development and engineers, will remain at work. The company is still hosting a trade show in mid-June to showcase its newest products.
