The future of a long-standing business in Bismarck is unclear.

Hoskins-Meyer Floral and Greenhouse on 302 E. Ave. E did not open for business last week, with a note on the door telling customers it was closed for the day.

That was more than a week ago.

The entire property, building included, was put up for sale in September for more than $500,000, said real estate agent Bill Daniels with Lahr &Lahr. He said the business is not for sale, just the property including the 18,630-square-foot building on the 21,000 square-foot lot.

On Monday lights were on inside and the Christmas displays were up and twinkling, although a peek in its back greenhouse didn't show the usual brilliant red of holiday poinsettias. The doors were chained shut in the back and wreaths lay discarded on the ground and on near-bare tables. There were a couple of boxes, not notably large or full; the only sign of life were the still-budding displays.

Those close to the owners cannot confirm whether it has closed permanently or temporarily, or give any details regarding the future of the business, which has had a stake in the area for more than 100 years. No one answered several calls to the business.
