A Mandan construction site has been hit twice by vandals in several days.

Mandan Police Lt. Paul Leingang said Mike Markwed of Markwed Excavating reported the vandalism to the site on 40th Avenue Southeast near the McKenzie Drive intersection.

Sometime over the weekend, vandals spray painted several vehicles at the site and broke a window, Leingang said. The spray painting included words and random lines and figures on trucks.

Markwed said the damage, which was found Monday morning, totalled about $2,500.

Sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning, vandals broke a bug deflector and a hood ornament on a 1995 Mac truck, broke out the blinker, headlights and windshield on a 1975 Ford pickup, broke out the headlights and dented the door on a 1995 Freightliner, and broke out the headlights and blinkers on a 1994 Kenworth, Leingang said.

Markwed said the damage found Tuesday morning came to about $2,200.

Leingang said no physical evidence has been found at the scene to link the two cases of vandalism, and there are no suspects. Markwed said he is convinced that the acts were committed by the same people.

The company has moved its equipment to an area with more light, and there was no new vandalism Wednesday morning, Markwed said.

"Last night was a good night," he said Wednesday. "I guess one out of three ain't bad."

The area where the vandalisms occurred has had problems with vandalism and thefts at construction sites in the past, too, Leingang said.

"It's a problem area for construction," he said.

Markwed said his company hasn't had problems with vandalism in the past but has had problems with thefts.

He said he would offer a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the responsible parties.

Anyone with information about the crimes should call the Mandan Police Department at 667-3455.
