Burleigh County bar patrons wrestled a loaded shotgun away from an alleged robber Friday night and held him until authorities arrived.
Arnold Wayne Young, 49, of Dickinson, was charged Monday with attempted robbery for trying to walk into the Burnt Creek Club, 1205 Northstar Drive, with a loaded shotgun, wearing a mask over his face, Burleigh County Assistant State's Attorney Leann Bertsch said.
Young was confronted in the entryway of the bar by two men when they noticed the mask and shotgun, Burleigh County Capt. Les Witkowski said. Young fled the bar when one of the men wrestled away the shotgun.
"The way it sounds, he was confronted in the entryway and was surprised," Witkowski said.
Several bar goers chased Young northbound and tackled him, Witkowski said. A cloth bag containing what appeared to be a bomb was discovered, and one of the men threw it into a ditch. The men then held Young until sheriff's deputies arrived.
The Bismarck Police Department bomb squad and the Bismarck Rural Fire Department were called in to deal with the device. The mess of duct tape and wires turned out to have no explosive parts. Another imitation bomb was discovered in Young's pickup.
Witkowski and Bertsch said Young never demanded anything, but he appeared to be planning to rob the bar.
"Let's put it this way. Do you put a hood on backwards … and take a loaded shotgun into a bar on a routine basis?" Bertsch said.
Young was charged with attempted robbery and is being held in the Burleigh County jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond. The class B felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years and a minimum of four. Young faces the mandatory minimum because a firearm was involved.
