A 28-year-old Bismarck man who allegedly outran authorities in a car chase Sunday morning was caught a short time later when police found him hiding under a vehicle.

Jason Beckman also ditched a loaded, sawed-off shotgun during the pursuit, Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said.

A Bismarck police officer noticed a silver Mercury Cougar with one of its headlights out at about 4 a.m. in the intersection of South Seventh Street and East Bowen Avenue. When the officer activated his lights, the car with a Minnesota license plate sped away, Donlin said.

The subsequent car chase ended seven blocks later. The officer abandoned the chase for safety reasons and because it was only a minor offense. Authorities continued to search the area.

The car was spotted a short time later in an East Bismarck Expressway parking lot. No one was inside, but an officer found Beckman hiding under a nearby vehicle.

Beckman originally gave authorities a fictitious name, Donlin said. He told them his real name a short time later after asking for medical attention. Donlin said he didn't know why Beckman needed to see a doctor, but said they approve those kinds of requests.

Meth and marijuana paraphernalia turned up in a search of Beckman's car, Donlin said.

A few hours later, a woman called the police department to report finding a 20-gauge shotgun and a black sweatshirt outside her 1119 University Drive mobile home. The officer involved in the car chase remembered seeing Beckman open a car door and throw something out during the chase. Video taken by his patrol car camera showed Beckman throw what appeared to be a shotgun out the door. Shotgun shells also were found in Beckman's car.

Beckman was charged with possession of meth paraphernalia, being a felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing from law enforcement in a motor vehicle, providing false information to law enforcement and possession of marijuana paraphernalia, Burleigh County prosecutor Lloyd Suhr said. He's being held in the Burleigh County jail on a $20,000 cash bond.

Suhr said Beckman has multiple convictions in several states. Beckman also is wanted in Minnesota and Colorado for fleeing law enforcement, possessing a controlled substance and assault.
