A Billings, Mont., man accused of threatening to shoot himself and a Mandan man Monday morning was tracked down about three hours later and 100 miles away.
Dwight Larson, 40, drove all night to get to his ex-girlfriend's 2309 Ninth Ave. S.E. house in Mandan at about 5 a.m., Deputy Chief Dennis Bullinger said. When he got there, Larson found the 35-year-old woman and her new boyfriend.
The couple wouldn't let Larson inside the house, so he allegedly kicked and hit the door in an apparent attempt to break the glass, Mandan Police Detective Jay Gruebele said. Larson was still battering the door when the woman called 911, but he left before police arrived.
While authorities were interviewing the Mandan couple, Larson called the house several times on his cell phone. The woman and police tried to convince him to surrender. During one of the phone conversations the woman overheard two gunshots.
At about 8 a.m., Larson finally agreed to pull over at a gas station in Mott. The Hettinger County sheriff met Larson there, confiscated his 9-millimeter handgun and held him until Mandan police arrived, Gruebele said. Larson told police he fired the gun in the air twice, but wouldn't say why.
Larson stayed overnight at Medcenter One hospital before he was sent to the Morton County jail. He was charged Tuesday with felony attempted burglary and terrorizing and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, Gruebele said.
