Four fires were reported in rural Burleigh County over the weekend, the sheriff's department says.

Lt. Nick Sevart said two of the fires were controlled burns that got out of control.

At 3:22 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's department responded to an area southeast of Bismarck where an unreported controlled burn had gotten out of control, Sevart said. He said the Bismarck Rural Fire Department extinguished the fire.

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, a controlled burn south of Bismarck got out of control and spread to a tree row, Sevart said. He said rural firefighters extinguished that fire, too.

Sevart advised people to report to the sheriff's department when they plan a controlled burn and let them know when the burn is completed. Also, he said to call as soon as a fire gets out of control, as the two people over the weekend did.

"We just ask people, if they are going to burn, please let us know," he said.

Around 3 p.m. Sunday, a pump jack on a well started a grass fire north of Driscoll, Sevart said. He said the fire moved close to a farm, but the only damage was a hay stack. He did not know how much damage was caused in the fire.

The Sterling and Steele volunteer fire departments put the fires out, he said.

At 5:51 a.m. Monday, downed power lines started an outbuilding southeast of Bismarck on fire, Sevart said. He said Bismarck Rural Fire Department put out the blaze.

Mandan Police Sgt. Jay Gruebele said a small grass fire also was reported in Mandan over the weekend. He said a passing train is believed to have started the small fire.
