9:50 a.m. - JAMESTOWN - An early morning blaze destroyed a historic building that housed a number of businesses and knocked out power downtown, fire officials said.
Jamestown Fire Chief Bert Gray said street crews cleaning up snow spotted the fire in the King Photography building about 2 a.m. It was contained after about four hours with no injuries, Gray said, but seven businesses were lost.
Eyewitnesses reported flames shooting high into the sky.
"The fire started in the large older complex that's been there since the late 1800s," Gray said. "That's totally destroyed. The building has collapsed.
"We did a major fight between that building and the other two buildings there, and we did stop it at the firewall. We saved those two other buildings," he said.
Gray said firefighters were watching hot spots and trying to restore power about 7 a.m.
"We've got a problem with power lines running downtown, running through those alleys," he said. "We've had to shut down major portions of downtown because of that."
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
"We've got everybody accounted for, and there's been no injuries," Gray said.
