A 17-year-old Mandan boy jumped out of an unmarked police car and ran Tuesday morning to escape a trip to the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan.

Mandan Police Chief Dennis Rohr said juvenile officers picked the boy up at the Mandan High School at 9:20 a.m. after receiving word from juvenile court that the teen had violated court conditions. The teen left home without permission from the court while he was under house arrest, Rohr said. The name of the teen was not released because he is a juvenile.

Mandan police officers handcuffed the teen's arms behind his back and seatbelted him into the unmarked unit. While on the way to YCC, the car made a stop at a stop sign in the 200 block of First Avenue Northwest and the boy jumped out and ran, Rohr said.

Authorities gave chase but were unable to catch the juvenile who jumped a fence and ran through back yards. Mandan police looked for the teen throughout the day, searching apartment buildings and sheds near where the boy fled. He hadn't been found as of Tuesday afternoon.

"We're checking all the probable places he may be," Rohr said.

The boy doesn't have a record of violent crimes and Rohr said he's not a threat to the community.

"Our primary concern is to make sure he's OK with the cold weather," Rohr said.
