Couple in fatal accident identified

The Washburn couple killed in a rollover accident just south of there Wednesday morning has been identified as Laverne and Marilyne Kreft.

The Krefts were returning to Washburn from Texas, where they'd spent the last two months, the state highway patrol said.

Laverne Kreft, 72, lost control of the couple's Lincoln Towncar on an icy stretch of road about 10 miles south of Washburn. They were traveling north on U.S. Highway 83 when the vehicle entered the ditch and rolled.

The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. New snowfall and freezing drizzle made the roadway slippery, the patrol said.

Both the driver and his wife, age 70, were using seat belts.
