Scott Young Bear, 21, of Bismarck, was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison with all but 18 months suspended. Earlier this year he pleaded guilty to terrorizing, a Class C felony, for writing threats toward three Bismarck high schools on his MySpace page in the wake of the April Virginia Tech shooting

"This was a remarkably bad crime at a remarkably bad time in history," said South Central District Judge Robert Wefald during the sentencing hearing in Bismarck.

Young Bear wrote a blog, titled "I love the massacre," on MySpace in the days following the April shooting at Virginia Tech, police said earlier this year. The entry indicated the writer found the mass murder at Virginia Tech humorous and thought a similar shooting in Bismarck would be funny, too.

It also included specific details for carrying out attacks at Bismarck High School, Century High School and South Central High School, including how many guns the shooter would carry, authorities said.

Wefald gave a longer sentence than the one year recommended by Lloyd Suhr, a Burleigh County assistant state's attorney, and despite the request of Young Bear's attorney, Marv Hager, who asked for a one-year deferred sentence.

Hager said his client felt "very bad" about what he had done. Hager told Wefald that Young Bear always has been gainfully employed, had a computer tech job and restaurant job at the time of the crime, is employed now at a local restaurant and hoped to go to college.

A one-year deferred sentence would mean that if he stayed out of trouble during that time, the crime would be wiped off of his record - that it was important Young Bird not have a felony on his record so as to not to hurt his chances for future employment.

"He wouldn't have to put it on his resume," Hager said.

Young Bear told Wefald the main reason he wanted a deferred sentence was because he was the only family member available to take care of his mother, who is diabetic and an amputee.
