Fall festival at New Salem St. Pius

St. Pius V Catholic Church of New Salem plans its fall festival Sunday, starting with a Polka Mass at 10 a.m. CDT. A meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, salads, buns and pie. The cost is $6.50 for adults, $3.50 for those 4 to 12, and free for children 3 and younger. The festival also includes bingo, a cake walk, silent auction and children's carnival.

Oblate meeting at Annunciation

The oblates of Annunciation Monastery will meet at the monastery at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Oblates are welcome to Eucharist at 11 a.m., followed by lunch in the monastery dining room. Anyone interested in the oblate program is welcome.

Tuttle spaghetti supper is Oct. 8

The annual spaghetti supper served by English Lutheran Church in Tuttle is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 in the church basement. The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for children 12 and younger, and free for those 6 and younger.

Pie and Coffee Day at Faith Oct. 8

Faith Lutheran Friendship Circle invites the public to its annual Pie and Coffee Day on Oct. 8. Activities run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and include selling of homemade noodles, lefse, baked goods, quilts, crafts and white elephant items. Pie and coffee will be served throughout the day for a freewill offering. Faith Lutheran youth will serve soup and sandwiches from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to help fund their trip to the 2006 National ELCA Youth Convention in San Antonio. All proceeds will be supplemented by funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and will be divided among local charities and Camp of the Cross scholarships for youth.

Central African Republic visitors

The Rev. Andre Zoule and Simone Baigo-Dari will visit Lutheran congregations in western North Dakota from Friday through Tuesday.

Zoule, who first visited the Western North Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 2000, has served as the president of the Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic for the past seven years. He leads a church of 30,000 members in a country where mass poverty and disease abound.

Baigo-Dari is the president of the Central African Women for Christ. She has played a leading role in the development of the Guest House project, which their visit will help promote. The women of the church in the CAR have committed themselves to the construction of a Guest House for church members to use as a meeting place.

Three ELCA synods - Western North Dakota, Eastern North Dakota and Texas-Gulf Coast - are companion synods to the Central African Republic Synod. Each synod has pledged to raise $40,000 for the Guest House project.

A reception for the guests is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Western Synod Office at 1614 Capitol Way in Bismarck. They will then visit with congregations at meetings in Minot, Carson, Wing, Kenmare and Camp of the Cross near Garrison.

Children's Clubs meet Wednesdays

AWANA Children's Clubs meet at Bismarck Baptist Church at 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays. AWANA Children's Clubs are a combination of Bible memorization, recreation and positive relationships designed to foster the spiritual, moral and social growth of children in the community. 'Beyond the Gates' at BismarckBaptist

As part of the preparation for the feature-length release of "End of the Spear" in January 2006, Bismarck Baptist Church will present "Beyond the Gates of Splendor" at 6 p.m. Sunday.

"Beyond the Gates of Splendor"is the story of five missionaries, killed in 1956 in the Amazon jungle, whose children and grandchildren returned to the Waodani people, who shared the story of how their lives were changed in the 50 years since.

Rededication of pipe organ Sunday

The members of Trinity Lutheran Church at Esmond invite the public to the rededication of their Kilgen pipe organ at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The festival worship service will feature guest organist Dan Nybo, of Leeds, and a time of fellowship following the service. The Kilgen organ was installed at Trinity in 1912 with funds received from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The two-manual seven-rank tracker organ has been in continuous service since its installation and has been recently refurbished to help preserve the instrument for future generations.

'Culture of Life' presentation

Mark Henry, a Catholic attorney and CPA from Phoenix, will speak Sunday on practical ways Catholics can heed Pope John Paul II's call to support a "culture of life." His presentation will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Church of St. Joseph, 108 Third St. N.E., Mandan.

In his talk, Henry will address the issues around Terri Schiavo's death, euthanasia and living wills.

Henry received his law degree from Seattle University Law School in 1983. He lectures extensively on stewardship and end-of-life issues and has been featured at several conferences and on EWTN. This event is sponsored by the Bismarck Diocesan Division of the Blue Army as part of the International World Day of Prayer for the Sanctity of Life.

There will be a Rosary for Life at 2:30 p.m., followed by Adoration at 3 p.m.

German potluck at St. Anthony

St. Anthony Church of St. Anthony will hold its annual raffle dinner as a German potluck starting at noon (CDT) Oct. 9, following the 11 a.m. Mass. The public is invited; bring a dish of your choice to share (non-German dishes are welcome). Plates, utensils and beverages will be provided.

The day includes bingo, a silent auction, cakewalk and fish pond. The parish and Christian Mothers raffles will be held at 3 p.m. Winners need not be present.

New pastor at Peace Lutheran

The Rev. Dr. Jack Eichhorst is the new interim pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Eichhorst will serve Peace Lutheran until the congregation calls a new pastor.

Eichhorst recently served in the same capacity at First Lutheran Church in Washburn, where he currently lives. For the three previous winters he served as pastor to English-speaking "snowbirds" and tourists in Mazatlan, Mexico, under the auspices of the World Mission Prayer League, an independent Lutheran mission agency.

Eichhorst grew up on a farm near Washburn and returned to the farm where he grew up after retiring in 1998. Immediately prior to his retirement, he served as senior pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown for eight years.

During his career, he spent 19 years as a parish pastor and 14 years as a professor and administrator in higher education. From 1982-89 he was president of the Lutheran Bible Institute of Seattle, now Trinity Lutheran College in Issaquah, Wash. He was also on the faculty of Dana College in Blair, Neb., and associate director of the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research at St. John's University and Abbey in Minnesota.

Eichhorst was educated at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., the University of Muenster in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar, and received a master's degree and Ph.D. from Yale University.

Peace is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Organized in 1987, it has about 300 members.

WTC survivor to speak at BSC

Sujo John, a World Trade Center survivor, will speak at 8 p.m. Friday at Bismarck State College's Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.

John will speak about his story of faith and a Dickinson band, "Sunago," will perform throughout the evening. College students are invited. The event is sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ.

'Autumn Treasures' retreat to be held

Sister Gemma Peters of Annunciation Monastery invites the public to a retreat called "The Treasures of Autumn" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 8. The retreat will "reflect on the mystery, wisdom, letting go, transformation and surrender of this glorious season,"she said.

The book "The Circle of Life" by Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr will serve as a resource.

Suggested donation is $30 and includes lunch, refreshments and materials. Preregistration is requested by calling Sister Gemma at 255-1520.
