Gandhi Peace Month events in Bismarck announced

Activities have been announced for the seventh annual Gandhi October Peace Month, sponsored by the Gandhi Peace Network of North Dakota.

The 13th annual Gandhi Peace Dinner will be served Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Third Street and Avenue A, Bismarck.

Tickets are $25. Carry-out dinners are available at 5 p.m.; dinner service begins at 6 p.m.

On Oct. 2, the 138th anniversary of the birth of Gandhi will be marked with a Peace Pole dedication at Will-Moore Elementary School at Fifth Street and Avenue E at 12:30 p.m. Students and teachers will travel to the state Capitol on a Peace Walk after the dedication, wearing peace T-shirts made by them.

On Oct. 4, a Peace Walk and Take Back the Night event in cooperation with the Abused Adult Resource Center will meet at the Capitol steps at 6:30 p.m.

The sixth annual Pack the Pantry for Peace will go on during the whole month of October at area grocery stores.

On Oct. 13, dedication of the Peace Place at Custer Park off Washington Street and Broadway Avenue will take place in collaboration with the North Dakota Peace Coaltion in memory of Joshua Nordwall; a concert is also planned.

Activities on Oct. 18 include the sixth annual silent auction for Sherman Brunelle scholarships, United Tribes Technical College, and the movie "The Squid and the Whale" at the Grand Theatres, in cooperation with Cinema 100.

Since 1994, more than $40,000 has been donated for children and women to local Bismarck-Mandan charities and charities in India, according to Aruna and Vinod Seth, co-directors of the Gandhi Peace Network.
