A Mandan woman has been sentenced to one year in jail for convictions stemming from an August incident in which her infant son was found wedged behind the driver's seat of her car.
South Central District Judge David Reich sentenced Sarah Dawn Gwin, 26, to three years with two years suspended and probation following her release and ordered her to pay $800 in fees for Class B felony child abuse and neglect.
Reich sentenced Gwin to one year for driving under the influence with a minor present, a Class A misdemeanor, which will be served at the same time as the child abuse and neglect sentence. Reich also ordered her to pay $150 in fines for driving without liability insurance, a Class B misdemeanor.
An undercover Mandan detective came upon Gwin's car, which was swerving across lanes, while driving home at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 21. The detective called for a patrol officer, who pulled Gwin's car over.
Gwin's infant son was found wedged behind the driver's seat, between a large liquid detergent bottle, the front driver's seat backrest and the center console armrest. Gwin refused a blood test to determine her blood alcohol content, but the officer recognized the odor of alcohol on her and noticed several open cans of beer and an open bottle of vodka in the car, Kent Morrow, her appointed defense attorney, said at an earlier hearing.
Gwin also received traffic citations for open receptacle and operator failed to provide child restraint device. She must pay fines for those offenses.
Gwin has been held in the custody of the Morton County Correctional Center on a $5,000 cash bond since her arrest on Aug. 21.
