Three people have filed for the Mandan School Board and two more have filed for the Bismarck School Board.

In Mandan, three seats are up for election, and so far, two of the three incumbents have filed for re-election. Donna Fishbeck and LuAnn Nider have filed for re-election. Board member Steve Nardello is up for election, but has not filed paperwork for the election. The third candidate for Mandan is Lee Fleischer, a former board member.

Fishbeck, 41, is the dean of student development at Bismarck State College. She and her husband Kevin have three children, ages 8, 12 and 13.

"I'm excited to work with Mandan,"she said.

There's a lot of work ahead, and she wants to be a part of it, she said.

Fleischer, 65, served on the Mandan board in the mid-'90s. Now he is a member of the district's finance committee. He is an associate at Horace Mann Insurance Co., which provides coverage for schools and educators.

He and his wife Linda have three grown children who graduated from Mandan High School.

"You have the responsibility to contribute where you can," Fleischer said.

Nider could not be reached. Four messages were left with her Wednesday and three messages were left with her Thursday.

In Bismarck, two seats are up for election, and only one incumbent has filed for re-election. Incumbent Paul Govig will run for re-election. Board member Parrell Grossman is up for election, but opting to run for city commission.

Recently filing for the Bismarck board are Donavan Klein and Cheryl Long Feather. Lawrence King also has filed.

Klein, 30, is a account analyst at Unisys. He and his wife Angie have three children, ages 6, 4 and 1. He is concerned about school safety and crowding.

"As a group, the school board should keep an eye on future growth," Klein said.

Longer Feather, 40, is the research director at United Tribes Technical College. She and her husband Wes have four children, ages 18, 9, 7 and 5.

"I filed because of all the work I've been doing through ASSIST," Long Feather said. "We have a lot to be proud of, many of our students are doing well, but we have a proportion of students who are struggling."

She works with this population of students through the American Indian Student Special Issues Strategic Team, known as ASSIST. The group works with students who struggle in traditional classrooms or with traditional teaching methods.

Long Feather also is considering a legislative run.

Govig, 51, is the director of development and community service with the North Dakota Department of Commerce and King, 42, is an attorney with Zuger Kirmis and Smith. This is King's second attempt at the school board. He launched a write-in campaign in 2002, but lost.

The filing deadline for the Bismarck School Board election is 4 p.m. today. The election is June 10. There are two four-year terms up for election. Applications are available online at www.bismarckschools.org, under the School Board link, by calling the business office at 323-4056 for copies or at the district office, 806 N. Washington St.

In Mandan, board members are elected to three-year terms. Applications can be picked up for Mandan at the Central Administration Building, 309 Collins Ave. Applications are due today.
