A woman and a child were taken to a Bismarck hospital by ambulance after the woman's minivan struck an apartment building.
Bismarck Police Officer Andy Zachmeier said a witness saw the minivan, driven by Michelle Weigel, 27, back out of a parking place at 1025 Laramie Drive, then begin to pull out of the parking lot at around 9:30 Thursday morning. Instead of pulling into the street, the van went straight and struck the southeast corner of the apartment building at 172 Boise Ave.
The green Ford Windstar rolled back into the street after hitting the building, Zachmeier said.
He said Weigel was unconscious when police arrived. The child in the backseat, Weigel's 3-year-old daughter, appeared OK but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Front air bags went off in the van, but it was not immediately clear how fast the van was going when it hit the building.
A window on the southeast corner apartment was bent in and broken, and bricks were knocked down. Police and firefighters entered the apartment and said no one was inside, though quite a few bricks ended up in the apartment.
Sgt. Dwight Offerman said the accident left a hole in the building that likely would have to be covered. Officers estimated damages to the building at $10,000 and damages to the van at $1,000.
Offerman said a medical problem may have contributed to the accident.
"We don't know exactly what is going on," he said.
Offerman did not have information on Weigel's condition Thursday afternoon, but said she was being checked out at a Bismarck hospital.
