A stolen dog was found by a Central Dakota Humane Society staff member Sunday. Ruby, an American Staffordshire terrier, was taken from the shelter Friday. The dog was found with a couple in the 900 block of Third Street Southeast in Mandan, Mandan Police Department Lt. Paul Leingang said.

An affidavit has been filed with the state's attorney's office to charge the couple with possession of stolen property, Morton County Sheriff Dave Shipman said. The sheriff's office received the original report of the theft because the shelter is outside city limits. The police took the report when the dog was found because it was found in city limits. The state's attorney will be asked who has jurisdiction, Leingang said.

The couple appeared to be the the same couple as the one that came in Friday looking at Ruby, CDHS Director Sue Buchholz said.

When they saw her Friday, the couple questioned staff about the adoption policies, then left. About an hour later, a man came and asked to see Ruby. He took her for a walk and did not return.

Staff members of CDHS spent the weekend driving around looking for the dog. She was spotted in a car that pulled up outside a residence on Third Street Southeast. The staff member went to the door and asked for the dog back, and police were called, Buchholz said.

Ruby was in good condition, except for a 3-inch by 3-inch sore on her neck from a thick leather collar and numerous bug bites. She also had a hearty appetite.
