Burleigh County Engineer Jon R. Mill was nominated to the North Dakota Highway Hall of Honor this week.

Burleigh County commissioners made the nomination at their Wednesday meeting.

Mill has served as county engineer for 27 years, and is credited with making outstanding contributions to statewide, county and North Dakota State Department of Transportation engineering.

Commisioners lauded him for his fiscal spending, budgeting and cost containment to keep pace with rapid economic development and transportation needs.

The board's proclamation stated that Mill is considered one of the pioneers in the region to promote and perform recycling of asphalt and concrete roadway materials.

It also said he is considered one of the region's top transportation leaders, being active on multiple committees that involve transportation or related issues.

The North Dakota Highway Hall of Honor is awarded once every two years.

"It is intended for people who make contributions to the safety, development and overall contribution to the roadway system," said Rodney Ness, Burleigh County highway superintendent. "It is not only for state level officials, but anyone who makes a contribution."

Ness must submit Mill's nomination by Sept. 15. The State Department of Transportation will announce the winner of the honor at its next fall bidding meeting.

Mill announced he will retire Jan. 1.
