A 4-month-old girl died Wednesday afternoon at a Bismarck day care when she quit breathing during a nap, police said.
A 23-year-old caregiver called 911 and began administering CPR after she noticed Stevie re Huber had stopped breathing, Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said. Paramedics arrived at the day care in the 2800 block of Hawken Street at about 1:44 p.m. and took Stevie to Medcenter One Hospital. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 23-year-old said it was Stevie's first day at the day care. The infant was fed formula and laid down for a nap. The caregiver noticed Stevie wasn't breathing when she returned to check on the girl a short time later.
Authorities didn't know if the caregiver was licensed or the number of children she cares for.
State law requires child-care providers to become licensed if they care for four or more infants less than 24 months old, or six or more children under the age of 12, said Corinne Bennett, state administrator of early childhood services. To get the state license, caregivers must pass a home inspection - sometimes including health, sanitation and fire inspections - and undergo a background check.
Child-care providers who don't need licenses can still get them. This group, known as "self-certified providers," aren't subject to home inspections. Bennett said there's no legal definition for the term "day care," but if a licensed caregiver looks after children at their home, the residence is called a "family childcare home."
There were no signs of foul play or abuse, but the death is under investigation, and an autopsy will be performed, Donlin said. The name of the child-care provider wasn't released because of the ongoing investigation.
Services for Stevie are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Parkway Funeral Service.
