A Bismarck pedestrian died of injuries he sustained when he was struck by a slow-moving vehicle early Friday, hours after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities aren't releasing the name of the 41-year-old man who was walking within a few blocks of his house when an early 1980s model Ford Bronco hit him, Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said. The accident occurred at about 7 a.m. in the entrance of Colonial Estates mobile home park, near the 1500 block of East Bismarck Expressway.
The victim was forced to hand in his car keys a few hours earlier when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, Donlin said. A woman picked him up and promised she wouldn't let him drive for eight hours.
The driver of the Bronco, Douglas Murschel Jr., told police he stopped before exiting the mobile home park, Bismarck Police Lt. Fred Wooten said. Murschel, 23, said he never saw the victim but pulled over after he heard and felt the collision.
The man was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He suffered a head injury in the crash.
No one was cited in the crash, but it's still under investigation. The victim's name will be released today after his next of kin are notified.
The Bismarck Police Department requests that any witnesses to the accident call 223-1212 and leave a message for Officer Terry Glatt.
