Sunday morning's relative calm was shattered by sirens responding to separate accidents, sending two people to the hospital and possibly leading to citations in both cases.

An eastbound white Chevrolet Silverado exiting the Memorial Bridge misnegotiated the turn, hitting the north guard rail on the ramp and jumping into the westbound lane. The driver continued on until bringing the four-door extended-cab pickup into the west parking lot of Hansen's Furniture.

According to an officer at the scene, rescue units along with a search dog were called in when one of the two people in the pickup claimed there was a person in the backseat who may have been ejected or taken off on foot. A search of the area found no evidence anyone else was involved. Witnesses who had been following behind the pickup, later came forward saying there was no third person. The two people in the pickup were taken by ambulance to the hospital, though it didn't appear either was seriously injured.

While the incident, occurring at 10:15 a.m., remains under investigation, the driver of the pickup was cited for DUI, and after visiting St. Alexius Medical Center, was transported to jail.

Also Sunday, one person was taken to the hospital for possible treatment after a two-car collision at the intersection of Washington Street and Broadway Avenue at 11:28 a.m.

According to an officer's description, a gray Chrysler LeBaron with a woman driver rear-ended a Buick Regal, which was stopped at the traffic light. The Buick's male driver and his daughter were uninjured and declined medical treatment. The driver of the LeBaron, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Medcenter One Health Systems complaining of stomach pains. The officer attending the accident said the woman said she was looking over her shoulder as she was changing lanes and didn't see the Buick.

This accident also remains under investigation.
