A Hebron woman faces a child abuse and neglect charge after officers and social workers found her home full of garbage, including half-full beer cans within reach of her 2-year-old grandchild.
Wendy L. Jones, 45, was charged Friday with the Class Cfelony. South Central DistrictJudge David Reich set bond for Jones at $1,000 cash or surety Friday afternoon.
Morton County Sheriff Dave Shipman said social workers asked deputies to help on a child abuse and neglect case Thursday afternoon. Social workers had removed a 2-year-old child from Jones' home after finding the home full of garbage and empty and half-full beer cans. Some beer cans were within reach of the child, Shipman said.
A report on the incident said the home smelled like "rotten trash," he said.
The child is Jones' grandchild, Shipman said. He said the child's mother lives in the basement and Jones was watching the child while the mother was at work.
Deputies were not able to go into the basement, he said.
Two other children who live at the home were at relatives' homes at the time, and the 2-year-old also was taken to the home of a relative, Shipman said.
Jones was intoxicated when she was arrested at around 5 p.m., the sheriff said.
